Greenock Morton’s search for a first win this season continues after a 2-0 defeat away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
The result leaves Morton anchored at the bottom of the Championship table with just one point from their opening eight matches. Their recent form reads four straight defeats and a single draw. Ian Murray’s side, who have scored only four league goals all season, face a daunting task to climb away from danger.
Team selection and early chance
Murray made eleven changes to his starting lineup, handing a first start to midfielder Sahil Bashir. Brian Kinnear started in goal behind a back four, with the team set up in a 4-2-3-1 shape. Morton’s first sight of goal came midway through the first half when Eamonn Brophy forced a low save from Inverness goalkeeper Ross Munro.
That save proved key as the hosts took the lead moments later. Paul Allan found space to fire Inverness ahead in the 26th minute. Morton goalkeeper Brian Kinnear made an important stop from a Ryan Duncan header before the break to keep the deficit at one.
Second half and sealing goal
Any hope of a comeback was extinguished just after the hour mark. Alfie Bavidge doubled Inverness’s advantage in the 66th minute, capitalising on Morton’s defensive uncertainty. The visitors’ frustration showed when substitute Laiith Fairnie was booked for a poor tackle on Ryan Duncan.
Morton used all five available substitutes during the second half but could not find a way back into the contest. Inverness saw out the game comfortably to leapfrog Ayr United into seventh place in the standings. The match was played at the Caledonian Stadium in Inverness on Friday, 25 September.
The defeat compounds a difficult period for Morton, who have been dealing with significant off-field issues and a lengthy injury list. Key players including Elyh Harrison, Zach Robinson and Michael O’Halloran were absent for this fixture.
With the league table showing a 21-point gap to leaders Stenhousemuir, the immediate focus turns to halting the slide. Morton’s next opportunity comes at Cappielow on Saturday, 3 October, when they host second-placed Raith Rovers.
