Jackson Longridge says Morton’s squad depth will be key as a busy run of fixtures tests the team’s recent revival. The experienced defender believes the competition for places will help the Cappielow side sustain momentum after a vital 3-2 win at Partick Thistle.

That victory at Firhill, secured by a Callum Sandilands brace, ended Thistle’s 14-month unbeaten home run in the Scottish Championship. It was Morton’s first win there since April 2025 and lifted the team off the foot of the table. The result forms part of a recent upturn, with three wins in their last five league matches. Morton now sit ninth in the standings with 10 points from 12 games.

Miller's tactical shift

Interim co-boss Gary Miller’s tactical choices were central to the comeback at Firhill. Michael Garrity gave Morton an early lead before Lee Ashcroft and Tony Watt put Thistle ahead. Sandilands equalised on 59 minutes and netted the winner nine minutes later, assisted by David Borso. Miller and fellow interim boss Michael O’Halloran now face important selection decisions with games coming “thick and fast,” according to Longridge.

Squad competition intensifies

Longridge insists every player will have a role. “That’s the thing with games getting called off, you could be playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday,” the defender said. He stressed that players outside the starting eleven must stay ready. “That’s why we’ve got a good squad there, because if those boys need to come in, they need to make sure they’re ready.”

With league points at a premium, Longridge views squad rotation as vital for maintaining the improved confidence. The team’s recent form shows three wins, no draws, and two losses in their last five outings. Their next test is a home match against fourth-placed Stenhousemuir on November 7, a fixture that will immediately challenge the squad’s readiness. Morton will look to bounce back from a 1-0 home defeat to Kelty Hearts in their last outing.

Looking ahead, Longridge acknowledged the challenge of the packed schedule but reiterated his belief in the group.
