Andy Ritchie marks 50 years since he first signed for Greenock Morton this month. The forward joined the club in October 1976 from Celtic for a fee of 15,000 pounds and would go on to become a legendary figure at Cappielow Park.
Ritchie made his first appearance for Morton that same month. He would eventually play 264 times for the club, scoring 127 goals. His prolific contributions were central to a successful period for the Ton. Under manager Benny Rooney, with Mike Jackson as a coach, Morton won the First Division title during Ritchie's tenure. The team also reached two major cup semi finals, in the Scottish Cup and the League Cup.
He recalled his early days with a memorable line. "Welcome to the Titanic!" Andy Ritchie said, describing the atmosphere when he arrived. He explained the comment was made by a senior player as he walked into a dressing room with a leaking roof and a distinct list, much like the famed ship.
Club Legends Reunited
Ritchie will be joined by another club stalwart for a special event. Former defender Jim Holmes, who joined Morton a few months before Ritchie, will attend a hospitality event with him at Cappielow. Holmes made over 500 appearances for the club, forming a formidable partnership with Ritchie on the pitch. The pair remain friends and their reunion highlights the enduring bonds from that era. Ritchie also played alongside striker John Goldthorp during his time with Morton. Reflecting on his legacy, Ritchie stated he is proud to be remembered so fondly by the Morton support and that his time at the club was the best period of his career.
Current Championship Context
As the club honours its past, the present squad faces a stern challenge. Morton currently sit 9th in the Scottish Championship with 7 points from 11 games, a record of two wins, one draw, and eight defeats. They have scored 9 goals but conceded 18, leaving them with a negative goal difference of -9. The team is on a two game winning run, however, having beaten Queen's Park 2-0 and Arbroath 2-1 in their last two outings. This recent form of two wins and three losses in the last five games provides some momentum after a difficult start.
The next test is a formidable one. Morton travel to face league leaders Partick Thistle on Saturday 31 October. Partick sit 18 points clear at the top of the standings, underlining the size of the task. The last meeting between the sides ended in a 1-0 win for Thistle. The upcoming fixture is a key part of Morton's fixtures list as they look to build momentum. The club will hope the spirit of past heroes can inspire the current campaign.
