Greenock Morton are confronting a serious financial situation, needing to find £320,000 by December to prevent a major restructuring. Finance director Kenneth Weldin has cautioned that if more money is not secured by the end of the year, the club will have to undergo some form of financial realignment.

Weldin provided a comprehensive statement to fans recently. He stated that the club has not had any payments from its main sponsor since July and is now working on the basis that this income will not arrive. "Without additional funding by the end of the calendar year, some form of financial realignment will ultimately be required," Weldin said.

The financial shortfall is now estimated at £320,000. Weldin noted that while entering administration is not certain, it remains a possibility. "I cannot give supporters a commitment that administration will not occur," he stated. He asked for care in conversations about administration, saying that rumors could negatively impact the club.

Operational adjustments and staff changes

Steps to cut costs are being taken to lessen financial pressure. Confirming the exit of first-team managers Ian Murray and Bill Orr will lower running expenses for the rest of the season. The club is also looking at possibilities for new commercial deals, sponsorships, funding, and investments, as well as possible savings related to its Dunlop Street property.

The club anticipates using its current funds to operate until around early or mid December. After that, it might need to access its Fighting Fund, which has collected over £70,000 from fans. Weldin emphasized that this sum would still not fill the remaining gap. He confirmed Morton is maintaining dialogue with those it owes money to and with suppliers, while also getting expert guidance. He recognized that better financial management and governance are necessary, with problems having built up over a number of years.

On-pitch performance amid uncertainty

Morton are dealing with this financial difficulty while positioned 9th in the Scottish Championship. Their latest results include two wins in a row, such as a 2-0 win against Queen's Park last weekend. Matchday and hospitality income have also been lower than hoped, increasing the pressure.

The team's next match is at home against Ayr United this Saturday. Supporters can track the team's fixtures during this challenging time. The squad will aim to keep up its recent stronger performances on the pitch.
