Morton Faces Financial Challenges Amid Dalrada Payment Issues
Morton has no intention of forfeiting any scheduled fixture, with the club's priority being to ensure all commitments to the SPFL, opponents, players, and supporters are met. The current situation is challenging, and the board is acutely aware of the situation. The board and football department are working together to explore all appropriate options available to us within the resources currently at the club while we manage a very testing injury situation.
What happened?
Ian Murray's comments reflect the very real pressures currently being experienced within the football department. The club has been dealing with the consequences of Dalrada's payment issues, which have affected the club's ability to meet its commitments. In June 2025, Dalrada entered into a sponsorship agreement worth £540,000 as voted on by members, which has been paid in full. In September 2025, a further £240,000 was committed, with no additional strings attached. Of this additional amount, £109,000 has been received to date. In January 2026, Dalrada formally advised both boards that its partnership would be coming to an end, but confirmed it would honour second-year options for players recruited through the additional funding, representing a potential commitment of £288,600.
Why it matters for Morton
The commitment for the forthcoming season amounts to £195,000. Brian Bonar has stated to us this week that it remains his intention to fulfil the commitment in full, but has cited significant timing and financial challenges. As supporters can imagine, this places significant stress on the football club. Everyone behind the scenes wants success for the club and is committed to doing all we can to achieve it. Success in the coming months may look different than previous seasons. On the park we of course want to keep competing and the players and management will give everything to do so. However, off the park is where it will matter most.
What comes next?
The club as a community-owned institution requires external support. Whether that be from Dalrada coming through with their payments, other sources of investment, or a combination of both. We do have several concerns with the Estrella deal which has been circulated. That is not to say these concerns can't be worked out, but the level of veto power in particular has the potential to cause challenges with board decision-making. We also feel it crucial to share with members what is being asked of the club. On the investment being successful, we have been requested to commit six figures on new players as well as an additional wage in the form of a Technical Director. While Estrella have sourced an extra £40k investment from a third party to help fund the Technical Director post, albeit not in full as has been reported, we simply cannot.
